DAYTONA BEACH – Dr. Larry R. Handfield, chairman of the Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) board of trustees, today announced the university has selected Dr. Edison Jackson as interim president, effective May 14, 2012.

Dr. Edison Jackson has been named as interim president of Bethune-Cookman University

The university will host a reception on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, to introduce Jackson to the B-CU family and the community, at the B-CU Performing Arts Center from 5-7 pm. The event is open to the public.

Jackson most recently served as president of Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York for 20 years (one of the campuses of the City University of New York with approximately 5,700 students). He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Howard University and his doctorate from Rutgers University.

“I’m very pleased with the selection by the board of trustees,” said current President Trudie Kibbe Reed, who will retire May 13. ”I have known Dr. Jackson as we served together, as college presidents, on the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education. “Dr. Jackson is the perfect selection as interim president for the great Bethune-Cookman University because he is not only an educator and scholar, but also a person of faith.”

Speaking on behalf of B-CU’s Board of Trustees,  Handfield said, “We are so pleased that Dr. Jackson has agreed to serve as interim president because he brings a wealth of experience, a commitment to excellence and will uphold the legacy of our founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune.”
