Post office food drive is May 12
The United States Postal Service is sponsoring a community food drive to take place at your mailbox May 12. The drive asks community members to place non-perishable food in a plastic bag at their mailbox to benefit people in need in Volusia and Flagler counties.

Chisholm Center to host ball
The African American Museum of Art is hosting a Black and White Ball at the Chisholm Community Center, 520 South Clara Ave., DeLand. The ball is May 12 from 7 p.m. to midnight. Advance tickets $15; dress is semiformal. Live music, live and silent auction and hors d’oeuvres. More information: 386-736-4004.

Mentor orientation scheduled May 15
Community Partnership for Children is recruiting mentors for teenage children in foster care. Attorney to discuss scams
Attorney Michael Pyle will discuss “Scams, shams and flimflams” from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. May 23  at the Daytona Beach Regional Library – City Island. Designed for seniors and their caregivers, the free program will concentrate on protecting oneself from the theft of money and identity and damaged credit. Related topics will include how to address phone calls, door-to-door contacts and other attacks. Pyle also will discuss the additional challenges in protecting yourself as you become more vulnerable with advancing age. More information: 386-257-6036, ext. 16264.

Radio club meets May 16
The Daytona Beach Amateur Radio Association’s monthly meeting will be held May 16 at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 620 S. Grandview Ave. Volunteer examiners will be present at 6 p.m. to conduct testing for all seeking their first license or upgrading an existing license. Bring the required license information and fees. Online auction ends May 17
The George Washington Carver Foundation is accepting bids on items on its online auction with all proceeds benefitting the improvement and development of the George Washington Carver Community Center in Bunnell. Items include a trip to Africa, participation in a SWAT police training, Golf at Hammock Dunes and gift cards to restaurants. A list is online at www.carverfoundation.org. The auction concludes on May 17.

Church to host May 11 concert
Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church Men’s Ministry is having a communitywide 100 Men Mother’s Day Concert May 11 at 7 p.m. Bring your mothers, grandmothers, sisters or aunts who are mothers to this event with some of the community’s most gifted male voices and musicians. The church is at 539 George Engram Blvd.

Daytona State sets registration
Daytona State College is holding open registration for the summer semester.  Classes start May 21 and July 2. Registration can be completed on campus or online at www.DaytonaState.edu. More information: 386- 506-3059.

Jazz social set for May 19
A Jazz Social Soirée will be held May 19 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Multicultural Arts Center 119 W. 5th St., Sanford. The event will feature an evening of networking, fashion on the runway, business exposure, music and door prizes. RSVP to Sweetrepeatz@yahoo.com.

Car show to help hospital
The Ponce Inlet Corvette Club will be hosting the 2012 “Vettes at the Light Car’’ show with proceeds going to the Betty Jane France Center for Pediatrics at Halifax Health. The car show will be held on May 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kay & Ayers Davies Lighthouse Point Park, adjacent to the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse. There also will be music, food, door prizes and a silent auction. Halifax Humane Society also will receive a portion of the benefits.
