Applications are being accepted for Volusia County’s Citizens Academy, a hands-on awareness program designed to educate citizens about county government operations.
Classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays from Aug. 21 through Oct. 30. The final class is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 12. There is no charge for the program, but applicants are asked to commit to attending all 12 classes.
Members will meet at various county facilities, including the Emergency Operations Center, Tomoka Landfill, Volusia County Branch Jail, Marine Science Center, Ocean Center and Daytona Beach International Airport. They also will view county construction projects and shadow a county administrator for a close look at the organization.
Program limited to 25 residents
Topics will include elections, growth management, community services, public protection, property assessments and budgets.
Basic knowledge of computers is helpful as class materials are posted online and e-mail is used to communicate with class members.
Applications are available online at www.volusia.org/citizensacademy and must be turned in to the county manager’s office by July 25. The program is limited to 25 participants.
