The state Department of Health Injury Prevention Program awarded a grant to the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA, which will give older adults the opportunity to participate in a program proven to substantially prevent their risk of falling.

The grant will allow for a limited number of full scholarships in tai chi: Moving for Better Balance, a program offered to seniors at the Four Townes Family YMCA, Port Orange Family YMCA, DeLand Family YMCA and Ormond Beach Family YMCA.

The class requires standing and movement for about 45 minutes at a time. To qualify, individuals must be at least 62 years old and earn a verifiable household income of less than $35,000 per year. Individuals must be able to attend and participate in the class once a week through June 30.
