Andreas Butler, Daytonatimes.com: DAYTONA BEACH -Florida’s two largest HBCU’s squared off on the diamond with
Bethune-Cookman taking a double header from Florida A&M
in windy conditions at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in downtown Daytona
Beach today. It was teh Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener
for both teams.
Scott Garner pitched a complete game shutout for B-CU in a 7-0 win in
game two while teammates Anthony Stokes went 2-for-4 with three RBI’s
and two runs scored
while Matt Noble was also 2-for-4 with two RBI’s.
Kelvin Singletary, Marlon Gibbs, Kendal Weeks and Hunter Barfield each
had a hit for the Rattlers.
B-CU (5-6, 2-0) won the first game 8-6 despite only getting three hits
while FAMU was hurt by committing six errors.
Ali Simpson had pitched six scoreless innings as B-CU cruised out to
an early 5-0 lead.
FAMU (0-10, 0-2) took a 6-5 lead in the top of the eight inning when
Weeks grounded out to second to score Gibbs who doubled to lead off
The Wildcats took a 7-6 lead when Shaun McCarthy reached on an error
to plate Eric Sams.
Jordan Dailey pitched one and two-thirds innings to get the win while
Josh Johnson had a hit with two RBI’s for B-CU.
The Rattlers were paced by Garrett Johnson who went 2-for-4 with two
RBI’s and Gibbs who was 2-for-4.
The teams go at it again tommorow in the series finale with first
pitch scheduled for 1p.m. in the series finale.
