FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office will take its cyber-safety message directly to the online community with the agency’s first live Facebook chat.

The one-hour event called Cyber Safety for Kids & Teens: What Every Parent Should Know will take place from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Jay Toth along with Karen Pierce, a school resource deputy, will be answering questions from the public during Tuesday’s live event and offer tips on how to protect children from the dangers lurking in cyberspace.

Topics are expected to include everything from the potential dangers of social networking and chat rooms, protecting online privacy and cyber-bullying to recognizing the warning signs of exploitation. There also will be advice for parents on ways they can monitor their children’s online activities.

More possible
Sheriff Ben Johnson said he’s excited about the upcoming event, adding that social media is allowing law enforcement to be more proactive about promoting crime prevention.

“Modern law enforcement is much more than simply reacting to crimes after they occur,” said Johnson.

“We want to do everything we can to promote good safety habits in order to reduce victimization and vulnerabilities and prevent crimes before they occur.

Social media allows us to communicate directly with the citizens, listen to their concerns and provide them with reliable information that they can use to protect themselves and their families. This is a very creative use of social media, and we plan to have more of these events if the interest is there.”

Anyone who wants to participate is encouraged to go to the Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/VolusiaCountySheriff) at 11 a.m. on Oct. 29 to join the discussion.

  1. I have delete a user a number of time in the last five years. I got a new Facebook with a different name. My Facebook was hacked and sending out friend requests none stop! Some reported me to Facebook as impersonating my real name which I used my middle name as my last name! The day after my page was hacked and all this happened! The guy friend quested me. I post on my wall a message I would add him but if he started stalking me or calling my phone it was not ok I use it to stay in contact with ppl around the country in the same business as me! As soon as I posted it a girl not on my page connected me saying he has been stalking her as well and asked if we could talk I talked to her! The guy has stalked me 5 years and he has been in her work and contacting her and following her as well. Both of us would like to know how many woman have blocked him how many times and feel that he is a safely risk to woman on Facebook! If some one could contact me about it that would be great! I had a problem with I’m 5 years stalking following and obsessing over me and she says he doing the same thing to her.
