Actor Carl Payne, who is most noted for his roles as “Cockroach’’ on “The Cosby Show’’ and “Cole Brown’’ on “Martin,’’ will star in a comedic stage play on July 25 in DeLand.
Andre Darby’s play, “My Prodigal Child,’’ will be performed at 5 p.m. at the DeLand High School Auditorium.
Darby, the younger brother of Grammy Award winning artist Terence Trent D’Arby, is a Florida-based playwright. In an effort to bring more art initiatives to Volusia County’s urban community, Andre Darby has been producing Christian stage plays that have been getting rave reviews.
“My Prodigal Child” centers on a woman who abandons motherhood in the efforts of pursuing a lavish lifestyle with her drug-dealing boyfriend. However, her praying mother refuses to give up hope and believes her daughter will find her way home.
Along with Payne, the play features comedian Will Speed and gospel recording artist Pastor Melvin Dawson.
The DeLand High School Auditorium is located at 800 N. Hill Ave. Doors for the play open at 4 p.m.
