Another look at Butts’ 500 wins
High school basketball season continues and although the Daytona Times is yet to do a local team report or cover a game of the week, its worth nothing this milestone again.
Atlantic High girls basketball coach George Butts picked up his 500th career win when the Sharks beat the beat the New Smyrna Beach Barracudas 63-21 on Jan. 15. He now has a career marker of 501-168.
Butts told the Times, “I didn’t really think about it much heading towards it. I just want the kids to have some success on and off the court. It’s a great milestone. It’s not easy to do. I appreciate everyone who has been a part of it over the years.”
He has more wins than any active local coach boys are girls.
The Sharks are now 13-6 for the 2019-20 campaign. During Butts’ tenure dating back to 1996 (24 years), the Sharks have had three Final Four appearances, four district champions and several playoff appearances. Atlantic also made the playoffs last season.
Butts has stayed motivated over the years.
“I enjoy it. I enjoy helping those who really want to play basketball and work hard to develop into good players. It’s been a challenge. I’m still competitive as a basketball coach as I was as a football player and basketball player as well as when I was a football coach. I actually played more football and a little basketball as a youngster,” expressed Butts.
In addition to working at the school, Butts is in the clergy. He is pastor of New Heart Christian Center, 1328 Hurst St., Daytona Beach.
