Wildcat hoops split road games; baseball and softball play tough

The Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman recently fell to South Carolina State 71-67 in overtime.

The Wildcats rallied from an 11-point, first-half deficit. B-CU failed to score on four consecutive overtime possessions while SCSU scored six consecutive points forcing the Wildcats to foul.

The Bulldogs held the rebound advantage 64-37 and led in second-chance points 7-12.

Jasmine Daniels paced B-CU with 13 points. Demetria Frank added 12 points and eight rebounds, Sarah Bolden contributed 12 points and nine rebounds while Jasmine Bugg had 10 points for the Wildcats.

Women rip Winston-Salem

The Lady Wildcats rebounded by thrashing Winston-Salem State University 72-54.

B-CU won the battle in several key statistical categories including: points in the paint 30-18, points off turnovers 22-14, bench points 24-7, and second-chance points 23-7.

Demetria Frank had 21 points and nine rebounds to lead the Wildcats while Jalissa Isaac chipped in 16 points. Euneshia Proctor added 10 points.

The Lady Wildcats forced the Lady Rams into 25 turnovers.

B-CU women secured their first winning regular season since 2001-02 and they won their most games in a season since 1987-1988.

Men lose big to S.C. Bulldogs

The men’s basketball team shot only 31 percent from the field in a 58-46 loss to South Carolina State. The Wildcats scored only 16 first half points.

C.J. Reed led B-CU with nine points while teammates Javoris Bryant had eight points and seven rebounds. Stanley Elliot and Aric Miller also had eight points a piece for the Wildcats.

Wildcats rebound; defeat Winston-Salem

The Wildcat men rebounded by handling Winston-Salem State University 66-45.

B-CU (16-14) forced WSSU into 25 turnovers. The Wildcats also won the rebound battle 38-25 and held a huge advantage in points in the paint 38-12.

Reed had 14 points to lead the Wildcats and Alexander Starling added 13.

Elliot chipped in eight points, Bryant had seven points and six rebounds, and Albert Abrahams contributed seven points and seven rebounds for B-CU.

Both basketball teams next face rival Florida A&M on March 4 in Tallahassee for their regular season finale before heading to the MEAC tournament from March 8-13 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Softball split at Stetson tourney

The Wildcats softball team competed in the Hatter Classic at Stetson University in DeLand this past weekend.

B-CU defeated Albany 2-1 and Stetson 3-2.

Allison Garcia had two hits and an RBI while pitching a complete game getting the victory for B-CU. Ashton Hinds also had two hits for B-CU.

Liz Parrish had two hits and an RBI and Aurelia Gamch had two hits for the Wildcats against the Hatters.

The Lady Wildcats suffered losses to the University of Albany 6-1 and Boston College 6-2.

Cesley Tafoya had an RBI single against the Great Danes for the Wildcats and Garcia paced B-CU against BC with two hits and two RBI’s.

Baseball battles tough

The baseball team competed in the Texas Tech Mike Wallace Memorial Classic this past weekend against Texas Tech University and Washington State University.

In a 14-12 loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders, the Wildcats were led by Matt Wright and Ryan Durrence, who each had three hits.

Also during their 12-8 loss to Texas Tech, B-CU’s Wright went 3-for-4 with four RBI’s while Alejandro Sanchez and Juan Perez was 2-for-4.

B-CU’s Peter O’Brien went 2-for-3 with a solo homerun in a 10-4 loss to Washington State. Perez went 3-for-4 and junior college transfer D.J. Leonard was 2-for-4 against the Cougars.

The Wildcats also lost to the Cougars 6-3. In that game, C.J. Laureillo had an RBI triple, Perez an RBI single and Alajandro Sanchez an RBI single for B-CU.
